About The Lancer
Although it is officially named the Lancer, crews prefer to call the B-1 as the “Bone” (phonetically it’s easy to see why – “B-One”!). The B-1 Lancer is a long-range strategic bomber of the USAF, serving alongside the B-2 Spirit and B-52 Stratofortress. The B-1B versions of this bomber were delivered between 1985 and 1988, with 100 manufactured in total. Of these, only 67 currently remain in service. The B-1 uses variable-geometry wing design and is capable of a top speed of Mach 1.25 at altitude. Though it’s not technically a stealth aircraft, the B-1’s design produces a radar cross-section that is around 1/50th of that of a B-52.
